A
Great Step Forward in Santa Cruz by
Jay Dravich
"Two
wonderful,
one might even say extraordinary, events have taken place in
Santa Cruz in the past month. In many ways they are both cause
and effect and so should be discussed as one.
The two events are these: A not-for-profit board of directors
for HeartStream Sufi Community has taken form. Forming any not-for-profit
board is a huge undertaking but it is the mission of the HeartStream
Sufi Community that makes my spirit sing.
For the first time ever (this
is not an exaggeration) an organization has been formed that
is inclusive of all three streams of Inayat Khan’s Sufi pathways
to The Divine. Alhumdulilla! May the light of the Divine shine
on this community.
The other remarkable event was
the decision to create a membership in HeartStream Sufi Community.
Community membership is a most interesting phenomenon. At its
best, it is a way for people to self identify and to accept
responsibility for others. Admittedly this is a difficult concept
to understand for us as Americans who have spent the past two
hundred years assiduously working to achieve anonymity. But,
it is a most beautiful paradigm when understood. It says I will
be here for you when you need me. It says when I need you, you
will be there for me. It says we are connected, not because
we have occasionally met at a Dance of Universal Peace, but
by something far deeper. By commitment.
I am sure you will hear much more
about both these topics in upcoming months in the Pulse but
in the meantime be aware that your first opportunity to become
a member of the HeartStream Sufi Community will be at our August
Sufi Camp in Happy Valley.
Huzur Nawaz – Master Musician
I
am at a time in my life when I want to pass on to others the gift
and the transmission that I was given by several great musicians
and teachers. I was blessed to be in NY City in 1968 when I was
invited with a group of other artists to the apartment of a Honduran
diplomat. While there I heard a record of Pandit Pran Nath. It
was a mystical experience. With the first note I was transported
into an experience of the "sound of God". The next day
at a friend’s apt. I noticed that Pandit Pran Nath was teaching
a class on raga for the first time in this country. The cost was
$35. I had exactly $35 in my bank account. I signed up. At the
first class when he entered the room, there was an unmistakable
atmosphere of peace. I became his student. He used to call me
his first student (I wasn't, really) and I hold that as such a
deep compliment to this day. I
noticed later when I met Pir Vilayat Khan and took initiation
that he too carried the same energy. They are both from the Chisti
school of Sufism. In this tradition the goal of musical practice
is to become the music.
Shortly after, I met Shabda Khan and others, and moved to the
Garden of Allah in California. I joined Allaudin Mathieu's Sufi
Choir, began studying North Indian bamboo flute with Sachev and
continued to study with Pran Nath. Later I learned the Turkish
ney, became the music director for Jalauddin Loras’s Mevlevi Sema
group, and played and recorded with Hamza el-Din.
When I was recovering from quadruple bi-pass surgery in 1999,
my dearest friend Sarmad called and said he had had a dream in
which Pran Nath, who had already passed on, had told him to tell
me that he could help to heal me if I would sing andolan, a kind
of vibrato technique. My friend didn’t know what any of this meant
but I did. I was right back in the experience of a small class
in NYC, where he had me repeat a phrase that represented "the
first breeze of dawn”.
The spiritual music of the great teachers I have studied with
are in me and with me. I would like to share the experience with
others. I will be offering a class on Tuesday evening May 1st,
"An Introduction to the Mysticism of Sound,"
at the Garden (6:30-9:30 PM, $35). I am also available for individual
music lessons. Learn
more..

Sharings from Junayad After
weeks/months of traveling this healing journey with cancer, complete
with lots of side roads and extra challenges, I am over with the
cancer treatments and on the road to full recovery....slowly.
My immune system is now getting stronger [though I still do not
hug as many folks as I used to], many of the sores in my mouth
and throat are gone or going away, and my voice and energy are
returning to me. So, after so much loving support from our beautiful
spiritual community – prayers, healings, food, love notes – I
felt like I had the energy to begin giving back to the community.
I am beginning with leading the First Thursday dances, and look
forward to this. I also hope over time to join Tofah in leading
some zhikrs, and to eventually begin a men’s zhikr. All of this
is Insh’Allah [God Willing], truly, as I have learned more deeply
than ever that all things occur as the Universe wishes to experience
itself through each of us, not necessarily because I have a desire
for something to happen. So, Insh’Allah, I will continue to get
more strength in body and voice, and will see some of you soon.
Monthly
Sufi Healing Service by Jemila Rose
I
am offering a healing service which is a Sufi based Spiritual
Healing Service that was envisioned by Hazrat Inyat Khan who brought
Sufism to the West in 1910. The Sufi Healing Service is an absentee
healing prayer circle offered to those who have requested to be
included for the furtherance of their healing. The Sufi believes
that the first step in healing any disharmony of oneself is to
seek to become healed. The person is not present at the service.
As the healing conductor, I lead a group of warm hearted people
who’s wish is to support the healing of those who are suffering
from physical, emotional or other challenging loss in their lives.
The concentration of several people united together to send forth
that healing vibration, works even more wonderfully than when
done by an individual.
If
you want to be on the healing list or to participate in the healing
service, call me at 831.464.1552. I will be doing the healing
service once a month on the second Wednesday at 7- 8:00 pm. The
next Healing Service will be April 11, 2007 at my home which is
912 Capitola Avenue #18, Capitola, CA. 95010. Please call for
directions and park on the street.

Jemila Majid Rose is a Cheraga (minister) in three Sufi lineages;
The Sufi Order, Sufi Movement International and Sufi Ruhaniat

in all three orders and conducts the service according to the
teachings of Pir Inayat Khan.

From
the Streets of Cleveland to the Santa Cruz Surf by
Bob Harrison
I
grew up on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio, and learned how to
be very focused at a young age. I went into the Marine Corp and
wanted to become a probation officer. I realized that I could
be a force for helping others who were in trouble.
Somewhere along the line, I learned to meditate, and became a
student of Swami Sachedananda and the Integral Institute. Meditation
has been a way of life for me for over forty years.
Last year I was riding my bicycle
and there was a truck in the bike lane. When I went to go around
it, there was another truck, so I had to swerve. In the process,
I hit a railroad track and catapulted on the ground. When the
paramedics took me to the hospital they asked me who they should
call. I had no idea, since my son was away on a trip. That was
a very odd situation to be in.
They did surgery putting a rod
in my broken leg and a corkscrew metal thing into my hip. My shoulder
was shattered, and they had to take off the muscles and tendons
and reattach them, after they put in a metal plate.
I couldn't even meditate for quite
awhile. I call what I experienced being in the "inch world."
Inch by inch I had to find my way back. I remember one day while
I was meditating all of the sudden I could feel all of the prayers
from my community flooding into my consciousness. It was so wonderful
and so healing.
The surgeon said, "Usually
with people who are your age, we replace the shoulder but because
of the health of your body, we can rebuild it." I felt that
was because doing yoga for many years and surfing every day.
The doctors predicted that it would
take me six months to a year before I would heal, but I'm already
back in the water after only five months.
I've received so much encouragement
from my community, I just feel like the message is, "open
your eyes, and see what's around you." Thank you for that.

Cynthia
Myers' Tulum Adventure by
Tofah Eileen
Cynthia Myers has journeyed to
many sacred sites in her life. Besides being a vibrant and skillful
Nia instructor and developer of Suffit, she has followed an inner
call and guidance that has brought her into contact with remarkable
beings in her travels. In June of this year, Cynthia will again
journey forth, this time to Tulum, Mexico, and is inviting others
to join her in this journey.
Five and a half years ago on
her first journey to Tulum, which she thought was just going to
be a relaxing vacation, she ended up, through a miraculous set
of circumstances, in an ancient power spot right on the ocean
in a simple palapa. During her six weeks there she found out that
she had landed right where the Mayan priests and priestesses used
to come to reconnect with nature. She was joined one day while
dancing on the beach by a woman shaman who invited her to join
her in a Mayan sweat lodge known as Temazcal. Later she was taken
into the Ceynotes (which are underground fresh water caves) by
another local shaman named Daniel Pool Pech. The Ceynotes are
purported to be where the upper world and the under world meet,
they are the abode of the Gods. Ceynotes were used for cleansing,
reconnecting with the elements and allowing one’s spirit to soar
with the Divine. Cynthia had an experience while floating in one
of the large Ceynotes, of a beam of the high noon sun that shone
a direct ray upon her in a pure white light . It left her so light
filled and elated that all she could say was " la luz, la
luz " (the light the light).
On June 18 through the 25th
Cynthia will return to Tulum for a Summer Solstice Mayan retreat.
This journey will be an opportunity to align with the resonance
of the ancient Mayans. It will also be a time to receive healing
from the local shamans and healers of the area and will afford
you ample time to rest and connect your own inner rhythms with
those of the Mother. Join Cynthia if you are able. It will be
remarkable. She can be reached at (831)334-0644 for more information.
